Nearly two dozen U.S. bullion coins and several hundred other coin products will no longer be offered in 2009, the United States Mint announced Monday.
The Mint is aggressively streamlining its numismatic product portfolio based on customer demand and in an attempt to better focus on its core offerings.
While silver coins look to be completely spared, American Eagle platinum, gold and American Buffalo collector coins with the "W" mintmark are not.
“Customers have told us there are just too many products," said United States Mint Director Ed Moy. We agree, and it’s time the United States Mint trims down and concentrates on the products our customers love most.”
The following collector bullion coins will be eliminated:
- American Eagle Platinum Uncirculated Coins (all options)
- American Eagle Platinum Proof 1/2, 1/4, 1/10, and Four-Coin Sets
- American Eagle Gold Uncirculated 1/2, 1/4, 1/10, and Four-Coin Sets
- American Buffalo Uncirculated Gold Coins (all options)
- American Buffalo Proof 1/2, 1/4, 1/10, and Four-Coin Sets
In addition to Monday’s announcement, the Mint said it will offer a "Last Chance Sale" to clear warehouse shelves of old inventory, making it easier to move into its new fulfillment center in Plainfield, IN.
Beginning on Saturday, November 15, at 12:01 a.m. (ET) and lasting to Friday, December 19, an extensive list of coin products will be offered for sale on the US Mint’s website and through their phone lines at 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468) from 8 a.m. to midnight.
For silver coin collectors, at least two coin sets may be of interest that will once again return to the Mint’s store:
- 2007 United States Mint Silver Proof Set™
- 2007 United States Mint 50 State Quarters Silver Proof Set™
An array of other products, some dating back to 1999, will also be up for sale one last time.
