US Infantry Soldier Dollar Sales Surge as 5 Ounce Silver Coins Retreat
March 7, 2012 by Rhonda Kay · Leave a Comment
Weekly United States Mint sales numbers were certainly a mixed pot. Demand catapulted for the commemorative Infantry Soldier Silver Dollars and the Defenders of Freedom Set while sales retreated for the suspended America the Beautiful 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins and the 2011-W Uncirculated Silver Eagle. As for silver sets, only one slowed.
With fewer choices available, collectors and enthusiasts turned to the new Infantry Soldier dollars for their silver intake. As in the past two reports, the proof Infantry Soldier dollar led, this time with 19,338, and the Defenders of Freedom Set followed with 9,356. Now that 32,762 sets in all have sold, only 17,238 remain available. The next most popular coin was the uncirculated Infantry Soldier dollar which climbed by 7,991.
Previously, Infantry Soldier dollars added 5,819 for the uncirculated, 11,551 for the proofs, and 7,184 for the freedom sets. In all, the proof commemoratives are outselling the uncirculated versions approximately 3:1.
Thanks to a nearly two-week silver coin suspension, sales numbers for the 2011-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle and the five 2011-dated America the Beautiful 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins retreated. The declines may be attributed to customer returns. The two dropping the most were the Chickasaw silver coin and the Eagle. Each slipped by 36 and 30, respectively. To the relief of silver enthusiasts, the US Mint resumed sales on Tuesday.
Once again, demand for bullion Silver Eagles picked up. Weekly orders hit 935,000, which mean February went up by 240,000 and March is already at 695,000. The latest year-to-date total came to 8,292,000.
