US Mint 2010 Silver Eagles Top 2008 Sales in 6.5 Months

Fewer silver coins were purchased from the United States Mint in recent days. Collectors are instead spending their spare time enjoying the summer, perhaps lounging in hammocks sipping iced tea. Sales lagged for every coin and set. The biggest performers were once again bullion Silver Eagles and the new silver quarters proof sets, though neither came close to attaining their prior week’s levels.
601,000 American Silver Eagle bullion coins were scooped up by U.S. Mint authorized purchasers in the last seven days, but that falls short of the 875,500 taken during the previous week. Yet, it is only mid-July and 2010’s year-to-date total of 19,645,000 passed the end-of-year total for 2008, which was 19,583,500. As for July’s total, it reached 1,476,500. That is close to the pace set in June, when 1,724,500 were sold by the 16th. The 2009 annual record of 28,766,500 is within sight, with 2010 looking to be the new dominating year for the eagles in a few short months.
2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Sets™ slid by a thousand from their previous gain. 3,801 were added to the total, lagging behind their previous growth of 4,806. In regards to the older set, the 2009 DC and Territories Quarters Silver Proof Set was still getting along with an addition of 579.
Individual coins retreated the most. Demand for the 2010 Disabled American Veterans Silver Dollars eased –almost half for the proofs. They rose by 463 while the uncirculated inched up 203. As a comparison, last week’s numbers were 910 and 281. Still, since each sale included a $10 surcharge to benefit the Disabled Veterans’ LIFE Memorial Foundation, another $6,000 was added and $2,166,650 has been raised since the coins were released on February 25.
The Mint continues the waiting list for the proof 2010 Boy Scouts of America Silver Dollars.
