It was another good week for silver numismatic products. The United States Mint launched a new coin set which likely helped its other products, as each outperformed its previous week’s sales growth. Even the bullion silver eagles gained some steam.
The Mint’s annual 2010 Silver Proof Set was released Thursday, August 26. By Sunday, 241,656 were scooped up by eager buyers. When compared to last year’s inaugural sales of 271,372, this year’s start was slower. Last year’s set, however, had four extra coins, including Lincoln’s Bicentennial Cents, and was $4 cheaper.
The new 2010 set should end up doing well though, since it is the only way collectors can attain the silver versions of the proof dime and half dollar. It is also one of three sets that boasts a proof Lincoln Presidential Dollar.
As for the America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set, 5,950 more left the Mint’s shelves, which compares to the previous week’s climb of 4,884. The 2009 DC and Territories Quarters Silver Proof Set also had a good week, advancing 1,049 for a total of 290,520.
Another bigger performer was the proof American Veterans Disabled for Life silver dollar. It exceeded the previous growth of 1,034 by tacking on 1,050. The uncirculated version was stronger too, posting 427 versus the prior 309 gain.
End-of-month demand picked up for 2010 American Silver Eagles. According to the latest Mint sales report, their August total hit 2,391,000 by Monday, leaving February as the lowest monthly total for 2010. It appears, so far, that August will be second slowest month in sales this year. Even though the latest total is low for the year, it still beats 2009’s August, which was 2,130,000. The Silver Eagles’ new year-to-date total is now at 23,540,500.
