There was another sellout of super large 5-ounce coins, silver sets’ momentum erupted, and bullion American Silver Eagles spiked again. While those products shared the limelight, commemorative silver coins eased in this round of United States Mint sales figures.
The US Mint’s network of Authorized Purchasers gobbled up the last 2011 Gettysburg National Military Park 5 Ounce Silver Bullion Coins and all of theĀ 2011 Glacier National Park 5 Ounce Silver Bullion Coins. Both debuted on April 25 with an initial expected mintage of 126,500. That grew to 126,700 by Monday, May 16, when the US Mint indicated they had sold out.
In other sales news, each of the silver sets improved over their previous performance after a full week of availability since their suspensions on May 5. The 2011 Silver Proof Set and Quarters Silver Proof Set lead the way with 7,644 and 5,088 in weekly sales. Previously, collectors scooped up 4,831 and 3,303 over the weekend.
Last year’s sets outperformed as well. The 2010 Silver Proof Set added another 944 to its total and the 2010 Quarters Silver Proof Set picked up 1,015. In the last round they grew by 687 and 796.
Commemorative silver coins slowed for the second week. Buyers took in 1,153 and 317 of the proof and uncirculated Medal of Honor silver dollars, respectively. Previously, each advanced by 1,960 and 448. The US Army silver dollars rose by 1,169 for the proofs and 210 for the uncirculated. They had increased by 1,305 and 385 in the prior report.
The bullion Silver Eagles have been hot in May. Their monthly total reached 2,177,500 after recently gaining 756,000 since last Tuesday. With the latest jump, annual sales in 2011 crossed the 17 million barrier and winded up at 17,425,500.
