US Mint Sales: 2011 Commemorative Silver Dollars Weaken
March 15, 2011 by Silver Coins Today · Leave a Comment
Collector demand abated for US Mint silver products, including the new 2011 commemorative silver dollars. Bullion American Silver Eagle coins, on the other hand, gained and have topped 11 million in annual sales.
Silver Eagles climbed by 748,500. As a comparison, US Mint Authorized Purchasers scooped up 668,500 during the previous week. The total for March has now moved up to 1,417,000. Year-to-date sales remarkably arrived at 11,079,000.
This milestone already places 2011 in fourth place among best-ever annual US Mint sales for Silver Eagles. Climbing to third place will be a more difficult task since that record, set in 2008, requires an advance beyond 19,583,500.
In numismatic coin news, proof Medal of Honor Commemorative Silver Dollars led with more sales than the remaining commemorative coins added together. Collectors took in 8,190 of the proofs versus 2,954 of the uncirculated coins. US Army Commemorative Silver Dollars came in at 2,720 for the proofs and 808 for the uncirculated strikes. The commemorative silver dollars had a combined weekly sales total of 14,672. In contrast, the previous report showed the coins rising by 42,148.
As for sets, it was the first time since the 2011 Silver Proof Set launched that the 2010 Silver Proof Set had the most sales. 5,479 of the 2010 version sold compared to 3,440 of the 2011 sets. Previously, each set gained 8,315 and 11,266 respectively.
Even though the 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set is still "temporarily unavailable" while the US Mint reviews silver coin prices, its total sales fell for the second straight week. This time it dropped by -230 to land at 244,337. In the last round, the sets fell by -129.
