US Mint Sales: 2011 Silver Proof Set Surges
March 22, 2011 by Silver Coins Today · 1 Comment
Except for the 2011 Silver Proof Set, US Mint silver product demand waned for a second straight week. This year’s commemorative silver dollars and bullion American Silver Eagle sales could not outshine their prior week’s increase.
The investment grade Silver Eagles added 652,500 to their total, compared to 748,500 previously. Their month-to-date number clocked in at 2,069,500, which is quite a distance from March 2010’s figure of 3,381,000. In the meantime, 2011 annual sales rose to 11,731,500.
Medal of Honor Commemorative Silver Dollars advanced 8,757, but that was less than its prior sales increase of 11,144. The proof silver dollar was again most popular, accounting for 5,772. The uncirculated version barely exceeded its prior sales, 2,985 versus 2,954.
US Army Commemorative Silver Dollars gained 2,727, down from 3,528. Broken out, the proofs added 2,069 and the uncirculated had 658.
As mentioned earlier, the US Mint 2011 Silver Proof Set managed to outperform its prior sales. In fact, it had its best week since its inaugural numbers were announced six weeks ago. In this round, collectors scooped up 25,940 of the sets.
The remaining two sets were not quite as hot. The 2010 Silver Proof Set climbed 2,026, and the 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set advanced 618. Although, it should be noted that the silver quarters set was only made available on Friday after the US Mint had temporarily suspended its sales and raised its price.
