US Mint Sales: Bullion Silver Coins Surging; Silver Eagles at 10M

Sales of Shawnee National Forest 5 Ounce Silver Bullion Coins jumped again, this time by 30,000 to reach 105,000 according to the latest stats from the United States Mint.
Sales of bullion 2016 American Silver Eagles hit 10 million.
This kind of demand marks a milestone for the five ounce series, because it has been several years since the U.S. Mint even produced such large quantities of the three-inch diameter coin. The last one to receive a similar market reception was the 2011 Olympic National Park coin when its sales hit 104,900 coins. As an aside, earlier Thursday the U.S. Mint started selling the collector version of the Shawnee coin.
Sharing the spotlight for investors is the 1 ounce bullion American Silver Eagle. As of Thursday, all of the week’s allotted 1,073,500 coins had been scooped up. More will not be available until next week since the U.S. Mint is rationing sales due to silver planchet shortages. Year-to-date sales have stayed on the fast track, hitting 10 million coins in record time.
Commemorative Mark Twain Silver Dollars remained the most popular in the collectible category. The proof edition gained 4,998 and the uncirculated coin added 1,455 to their total. Together their sales rose to 65,076 out of a possible mintage of 350,000.
The table below shows the latest sales stats for collector coins and related silver products from the U.S. Mint. Sunday, February 21, is the as of date for the collectibles and Thursday, February 25, is the as of date for the bullion products.
