Grand Canyon National Park 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin

It became official Wednesday, August 31, the United States Mint declared the Grand Canyon Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin "sold out." The coin moved to the Mint’s online “No Longer Available” page in the afternoon. The change seemed belated, since more than 27,000 had been ordered. 154 extra sold in the previous round of sales and another 620 were taken in this round, totaling 27,774 in the newest edition of US Mint sales figures. No waiting list was ever announced for the Grand Canyon issue, unlike the multiple warnings made for the previous Yosemite five ounce coin.

As for other silver coins in the US Mint’s line up, only one came out above its previous weekly sales increase, despite the wild ride that silver took in the precious metals market and all the attention that came with it. The 2011 Medal of Honor uncirculated silver dollar erupted by 1,562 compared to its prior gain of 89.

Even the popular 9/11 silver medal sales eased. Collectors took in 437 strikes from West Point, but they let go of 19 strikes from Philadelphia, cutting its total. Those stats followed a 10,377 and a 7,131 advance in the previous report. The odd part was the fact that the silver medals were available all week long, quite opposite of the 2010 silver sets and the 2011 Proof Silver Eagle which had been suspended.

Sales of the 2010 Silver Proof Set and 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set were halted on Friday, August 19, and were reinstated on Thursday, August 25. When the sales were tallied as of Monday, August 29, the US Mint had sold 338 of the proof sets and 524 of the quarters proof sets versus earlier respective rises of 373 and 1,374.

Perhaps the suspension of 2011 Proof Silver Eagles effected the US Mint’s revenue the most. The coins were taken off the market on Wednesday, August 24, and resumed on Monday, August 29. The lucky collectors last week who scooped up the Eagles before their price went up by $8.50 per coin managed to get 10,593 of them, compared to 36,981 previously. The Silver Eagle’s price went from $59.95 to $68.45.

Numbers for the 2011 America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coins were updated in this report. As of Tuesday, August 30, the US Mint sold 17,500 Chickasaw National Recreation Area coins, 28,800 Vicksburg National Military Park coins, and 81,200 Olympic National Park coins. The Gettysburg National Military Park and the Glacier National Park coins already sold out, with 126,700 coin sales each.
