US Mint Sales: Hot 2011 Proof Silver Eagles Debut

2011 Proof Silver Eagle

This year’s 2011 Proof Silver Eagles kicked off with an incredible start. Collectors pounced on the .999 fine silver coins much like they did in 2010, indicating the market for them remains red hot.

Collectors took in 367,623 Silver Eagles in approximately six days, according to the latest US Mint sales figures. The proof coin launched Thursday, June 30, and the stats account for sales as of Tuesday, July 5.

Last year’s proof had an impressive start of 273,212, but their recorded time frame was much shorter. It showed what collectors accumulated from Friday, November 19 through to Sunday, November 21. In the 2008 debut, 185,232 proof Silver Eagles sold in the first four days. The US Mint did not release 2009 proofs.

The Silver Eagles overshadowed the debut of the 2010-P Grand Canyon Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins. 19,300 sold between its launch on Wednesday, June 29 and Tuesday, July 5. Its inaugural sales is below Yosemite and Yellowstone’s debuting numbers of 20,511 and 24,626, although their time frames are slightly different. Collectors picked up approximately 25,000 Hot Springs during its earliest days on the market.

US Mint sales soared for other silver products as well. Nearly every numismatic item exceeded its prior weekly gains. The 9/11 Silver Medal that debuted on the charts last week was the main exception since its opening numbers were high and sales naturally retreated. In this round, 8,616 sold, with the West Point versions leading the Philadelphia versions 5,125 to 3,491.

A "waiting list" is still in place for the Yosemite Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins that unofficially sold out a few weeks back. The US Mint will continue the waiting list option until they are satisfied that older orders that get cancelled can still be replaced with one on the list.

As for other US Mint coins and sets, the biggest improvement went to the 2011 Silver Proof Set. It grew by 3,884 versus 2,509. Next was this year’s America the Beautiful Silver Quarters Set which gained 1,710 as compared to 1,026 previously.

Another item that shot like a rocket was the proof Medal of Honor dollar. It catapulted by 1,397 after adding 853 in the last round. The next stud in the group was the proof US Army dollar with 658, followed by last year’s America the Beautiful Silver Quarters Set, which advanced by 558.

Bullion 2011 Silver Eagles rose as well. Authorized Purchasers scooped of 414,000 since the last report. June closed with 3,402,000, and July started with 386,000. The 2011 cumulative total hit a remarkable 22,689,500.
