U.S. Mint image of the 2010-P Mount Hood 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated CoinAnother America the Beautiful 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin kicked off to a solid start, although US Mint sales show it moved slower than the previous issues in the series. The collector Mount Hood coin launched Thursday, July 28. Die-hard fans of the extra-large .999 fine silver issues grabbed 14,759 in the first four days.

Because the time frames vary, it is difficult to compare Mount Hood debut sales to the immediate previous strike. The 2010-P Grand Canyon Silver Uncirculated Coin started with 19,300 in six days. The Yosemite Silver Uncirculated Coin and Yellowstone Silver Uncirculated Coin, however, clearly opened with more gusto at 20,511 and 24,626 in their earliest four days. The very first 5 ounce coin, honoring Hot Springs, sold approximately 25,000 in four days.

Despite the attention on the newest arrival, it was the 2011 Proof Silver Eagles that stole the spotlight. Silver Eagle sales incontestably topped Mount Hood sales nearly 2:1. Collectors scooped up another 28,522 proof coins during the week, making the Eagles the highest selling numismatic silver product on the chart.

9/11 Silver Medals still kept their speed up with a combined leap of 13,410. In the last round, they surged 16,488. Broken out, the West Point issues led with 8,109 while the Philadelphia strike followed with a 5,301 gain.

Sales of bullion Silver Eagles stayed in action during the hot summer month of July. Authorized Purchasers ordered 2,968,000 of them, making it the second best-ever July (behind 2010) and the 14th best month in the Eagle’s history. August got off to a bang with orders for 258,500 more on its first day. With that, the annual total bumped up to 25,530,000.
