US Mint Sales: October Silver Eagles Hit 2M, Old Sets Stronger
October 20, 2010 by Silver Coins Today · Leave a Comment
American Silver Eagle bullion coins were full of life in the latest United States Mint sales data, while the remaining numismatic silver items continued a very slow decent in their weekly sales.
It has been 19 days in October and already the month-to-date tally for Silver Eagle coins reached the 2 million marker. U.S. Mint Authorized Purchasers must have been stocking up when they bought another 650,000 between October 13 and 19.
The October total easily overtook September’s amount of 1,880,000. If their pace continues, they are on track to roll past August’s 2,451,000 before next Wednesday. Speaking of taking over, 2010 sales are only 1,286,000 away from 2009’s end of year total, which was 28,766,500.
The best numismatic performer was the 2010 Silver Proof Set. They added another 11,481, bringing them to 383,908. So, it looks like it will be a few more weeks before it reaches the 400K milestone. Another set to pull in high numbers was the America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Sets. They climbed 2,522, which was a tad behind the 2,882 that was added in the last round.
It may be hard to explain the continuous rise in the 2009 DC & US Territories Silver Quarters Proof Sets. They surged again for a second week. This time 1,726 were picked up by collectors. In the previous rounds it was 1,070 and 845. The sets contain six 90 percent silver quarters, or 1.08504 troy ounces per set, while the Mint’s sticker price remains $29.95. Could it be that the increase in the set’s melt value is driving sales? At 23.71 an ounce (London Fix on October 20), the intrinsic silver value comes to $25.72.
American Veterans Disabled for Life silver dollars increased by 1,237 for the proof and 457 for the uncirculated. Those gains were slightly behind the 1,993 and 586 additions from the previous round. Still sales remained steady while their combined total clocked in at 241,700. The coins are only 108,300 away from their 350,000 maximum mintage.
The next numismatic launch will be the long-awaited 2010 Proof Silver Eagles on November 19.
