Collectors focused most of their energy on the debuting 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set. 61,181 left the United States Mint’s shelves during the first seven days of its launch. It was released on January 10, 2012.
Although sales were solid, they could not match the 2010 Quarters Silver Proof Set which started at 73,756. The older set, however, was the inaugural issue for the series. As for last year’s set, a comparison can hardly be made. The U.S. Mint did not report initial sales for 2011 Quarters Silver Proof Set until three weeks after it was released. When the number was announced, it had reached 78,054.
One factor helping this year’s set was its availability in the U.S. Mint’s Online Subscription Program, which automatically charges a buyer’s credit card and mails the latest issue as soon as it becomes available. The subscription program has made it easier for collectors to acquire the newest products, especially in a long series like the America the Beautiful Quarters®.
Another new item appeared on the sales chart with the new quarters set, the 2011-P Vicksburg 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin. As mentioned in an earlier article, collectors ordered up 7,861 in the first few days.
One interesting note on the sold out 2010-P Mount Hood 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin was its latest sales of 26,928. Its maximum mintage was originally 27,000 like the other 2010-dated issues in the series, but the lack of a waiting list could mean the final 72 coins might not get sold.
Another anomaly in U.S. Mint sales was the 2011 Silver Proof Set. The Mint failed to include the set in its latest report. It was as if it was removed from the list along with the 2010 Silver Proof Set that the Mint stopped selling in December. In the previous round, the weekly increase for the 2011 set was 1,782. Expect a fresh update next week.
The third best seller among silver numismatic products was the 2011 Uncirculated Silver Eagle. Collectors picked up another 4,775 of them, which was up from the 3,122 purchased in the prior round. Its most recent total came to 238,240.
Similar to last year, January has been an incredible month for bullion Silver Eagles. Authorized Purchasers grabbed another 915,000 since last Wednesday, moving the month to date total to 5,172,000. If sales continue without slowing down, January 2012 may surpass January 2011’s record of 6,422,000.
