US Mint Sales: Silver Coins Surge, American History Set Sold Out

Collector demand for silver coins and related products rebounded from a summertime lull, according to the latest United States Mint sales stats.

The pickup is directly related to pricing cuts that the US Mint implemented on July 11, 2013 for four silver coins and five silver sets. Each of these silver products notched higher weekly sales — some of them sharply higher.

One of the sets with a lowered price tag was the Making American History Coin and Currency Set, which debuted last year on August 7, 2012. Its sales jumped 1,722 compared to 38 previously. That put its total at 60,000 by Sunday and the US Mint by Tuesday said it sold out.

Making American History Coin and Currency Sets have a $5 bill with a beginning serial number of "150" to mark the 150th anniversary of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) and a 2012-S Proof American Silver Eagle Coin. The inclusion of the Silver Eagle was a bit of a sore spot with some collectors because it was unexpected. That coin was also in the 2012 San Francisco Silver Eagle Two Coin Set that had sold out earlier in the year. The two-coin set had a four-week ordering window with sales closing at 224,981.

In some other weekly sales stats that involved silver coins or sets with lower prices:

• The 2013-W Proof Silver Eagle skyrocketed by 16,191 to reach 599,371. In the prior report, it moved by only 3,122. Its price was also reduced by $5.
• The 2013 Silver Proof Set advanced 5,155 to 261,345 compared to the prior increase of 3,122. It enjoyed a $7 reduction.
• The 2013-W Uncirculated Silver Eagles climbed 2,132 to 118,775 compared to 1,339 previously. Its price was chopped down by $5.
• The 2012 America the Beautiful Quarter Silver Proof Set moved up 1,255 to 196,146. It had gained just 409 in the prior week when its price was $5 higher.
