US Mint Sales: Silver Coins Surge, Yosemite 5 Oz Coin Sells Out

2011 Proof Silver Eagle

Demand for major silver coins has soared, according to the latest round of US Mint sales stats. It was another impressive week for the 2011 Proof Silver Eagles. Their sales catapulted 133,420 in seven days, supported by the Mint’s removal of their household limits and greater attention to silver coins as silver prices have recorded marked gains. The Eagle jump was more than double the gain they made in the previous round, which was 52,050. Since their June 30 launch, collectors have grabbed 593,461 of the proof version, or 69% of the 860,000 the United States Mint sold of last year’s strike.

Another group to spike was the 9/11 silver medals. Their combined total leaped by 16,488 compared to 2,929 previously. The West Point issues continued to outpace the Philadelphia issues 9,830 to 6,658 this time.

The next biggest shaker in the lineup was the 2011 Silver Proof Set. It too experienced week over week sales gains at 3,038 versus 2,999.

The US Mint officially declared the Yosemite National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin sold out on Monday, July 25. It moved the coin to its online "No Longer Available" page. The pace of the sell out was slower than its predecessors, but part of that was the result of its placement on the wait list notice that was inadvertently posted too soon. In all, it took a little more than six weeks from its launch on June 9 to reach its last official day of availability.

The availability of the Grand Canyon National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin continued on its sales journey, albeit a slower pace. The latest US Mint sales figures showed 759 sold as compared to 1,192 in the previous round. News of the "Light Finish" variety, however, may boost the amount of attention toward the silver coins. To date, 22,785 of the available 27,000 have sold.

Sales of bullion Silver Eagles coins lost some speed compared to the prior week. Authorized buyers took in 540,500 which was down from 856,000 last Wednesday. The new total for July clocked in 2,510,000 and its annual sales rolled in at 24,813,500.
