US Mint Sales: Silver Eagles Hit New Monthly Record

Talk about a busy month for the US Mint. January 2011 sales of Silver Eagle bullion coins shattered the all-time monthly record when they hit 4,588,000 this week.
The Silver Eagles total sat at 3,357,000 in the previous report. US Mint Authorized Purchasers bought another 1,231,000 since, breaking the old monthly November 2010 record which sits at 4,260,000. That is smaller than this month’s total by 328,000. With more than a week to go in January 2011, the distance between the old and new record should lengthen significantly more.
In numismatic silver coin sales, only two silver items moved as most of the older 2010-dated products are no longer available. The 2010 American Silver Eagle proof coin remained unchanged at 860,000. The Mint appears to have completed making sales adjustments for the .999 fine silver proof coins which sold out during the final week in December.
The 2010 Silver Proof Set grew by 4,424, which was down from the previous advance of 5,007. Its new total landed at 523,514. In order to beat the sales of the 2009 version, more than 170,892 will need to be sold.
As for the 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set, collectors scooped up another 1,323, but that was less than the 2,004 in the last round. It is still 67,354 away from matching 2009 Quarters Silver Proof Set’s total, which by the way, has not changed these last two weeks.
There are six more days before the 2011 Silver Proof Set launches. Tuesday, January 25, will likely be a busy day for the US Mint.
