US Mint Sales: Silver Eagles Hot, Numismatic Silver Sets and Coins Cool
March 29, 2011 by Silver Coins Today · Leave a Comment
The market for bullion American Silver Eagles remains hot in March, but United States Mint numismatic silver products slowed for another week. One item did out-do its prior performance.
Silver Eagles have been getting closer to the 3 million marker for March, but they have not crossed it yet. 2,767,000 have sold to US Mint Authorized Purchasers this month. As a comparison, nearly 3.4 million sold in March 2010 and more than 3.1 million sold in March 2009.
The numismatic standout for most units sold was the 2011 Silver Proof Set, but its weekly US Mint sales of 19,640 was lower than the previous 25,940.
Collectors picked up 6,648 Medal of Honor Commemorative Silver Dollars and 1,864 US Army Commemorative Silver Dollars. Those numbers were down from 8,757 and 2,727. The proofs outsold the uncirculated 2.6:1. The proof Medal of Honor Silver Dollar was the most popular with US Mint sales of 4,848.
Demand for older sets was expectedly lower. The 2010 Silver Proof Set added 1,899 and the 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set jumped by 1,165. The quarters set was the only collectible product to outperform it prior sales. In fact, it nearly doubled. Previously its total rose by just 618, but then it was only available the last three days of the week due to a suspension and price adjustment. The debuting US Mint sales for the 2011 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set will be available next week, as it will be released on Friday, April 1, for $41.95.
