US Mint Sales: Silver Proof Sets and Coins Mixed
April 28, 2010 by Silver Coins Today · Leave a Comment
The latest United States Mint sales report is a mixed bag when comparing weekly gains in silver proof sets and silver coins.
2010 American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollars enjoyed a stronger showing. Collectors purchased more last week than the prior one. The proof and uncirculated $1 coins grew by 2,696. The last report had them up 2,284. As of Sunday, the commemoratives reached 196,469, or 56.1% of their allotted 350,000 mintage.
While the weekly numbers for the 2010 Boy Scouts of America Silver Dollars have continually declined since their release, they are much larger and have benefited from exceptional collector demand. The uncirculated dollars sold out with their latest sales at 107,292. The proofs are still available, and even more popular. 223,310 of them have been scooped up, leaving just 19,398 left before the BSA silver dollars hit their combined 350,000 ceiling.
The silver proof sets were split.
- The 18-coin 2009 US Mint Silver Proof Set gained a bit of traction. Weekly sales were 1,305 versus the last 1,173. The sets should top the 680,000 figure by next week’s report.
- Demand declined for the 2009 DC and Territories Quarters Silver Proof Set. Numbers increased 481 compared to the prior 675. Weekly gains have been under 1,000 for some time, but that will end soon. The set will not be available for long — less than a month in fact. The 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set will replace it on May 27.
For bullion coins, American Silver Eagles topped the 11 million marker — the most ever during the first four months of a year. April figures are at 2,170,000. However, unless sizable bulk orders are placed soon — and that is not out of the questions given the recent dip in silver prices, it looks like April 2010 sales will fall short of the 2,518,000 sold in April 2009.
