US Mint Silver Coin Sales Slow, Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Leads

Numismatic silver coin products moved slowly for a second straight week, per the latest U.S. Mint sales report. The leaders of the group were individual commemorative coins, and similar to prior weeks, the proof Star-Spangled Banner Silver Dollar was the clear front runner.

7,237 of the orders were for the proof Star-Spangled Banner dollar, and that pushed its latest sales total up to 67,313. Demand for the uncirculated silver coin was considerably less, with orders of 2,613. As for the Two-Coin Proof Set, just 425 sold. The Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Coins launched on March 5, 2012.

The second-place bestseller for the week was the proof Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar. Collectors scooped up 2,823 of the individual proofs and another 1,466 within the Defenders of Freedom Sets — it contains a proof along with memorabilia.

The Defenders of Freedom Set, it should be noted, is likely to sell out at some point because its production limit is 50,000 and 5,088 remain. Plus, since March 19, the Defenders of Freedom Set has been $3 less than the individual proof coin. The set is $51.95 but the proof Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar by itself is $54.95.

Rounding out the top selling U.S. Mint silver products was the 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set, the  2011-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle, and the uncirculated Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar.

Bullion American Silver Eagles climbed another 550,000 since last week. They have been stronger for the most part of March, with the best gain occurring last week when 797,000 sold. As of Wednesday, the monthly total advanced to 2,412,000 and the annual sales number hit 10,009,000.
