US Mint Silver Coins Sales Rise, Eagles Top 19 Million
September 9, 2009 by Silver Coins Today · Leave a Comment
US Mint collector silver coins and set sales picked up nicely, no doubt helped by recent soaring silver prices. Bullion Silver Eagles settled down some from their roaring pace last week, but they are still on fire.Let’s get to some of the numbers …
As has become the tradition of late, 2009 Silver Proof Sets lead, with another 16,278 sold. In contrast, 12,852 were purchased by collectors during the prior reporting period. 30,000 more and the sets will topple 500,000. Not bad considering the US Mint only put them up for sale on July 19.
Proof Braille Commemorative Silver Coins performed better than normal as well. Just last week we mentioned how they had found a comfort zone with weekly increases ranging between 600-650. The proof silver coins nearly doubled that in the latest cycle, rising 1,124.
On the bullion side of coin sales, American Silver Eagles jumped up another 450,000 during the last seven days. They passed over 19 million — 19,214,500 to be exact. Last year’s record of 20.583 million could be shattered by month’s end.
In related silver bullion news that is sure to impact sales next year, the US Mint today released the list for the new America the Beautiful Quarters to be issued from 2010 to 2021. What many don’t realize is that the law authorizing the 56 quarters also mandates 5-oz, .999 fine silver coin bullion versions. These will have a diameter of nearly twice that of the Silver Eagles.
The following two tables have the latest US Mint stats for collector silver coins and sets and bullion silver eagles.
