US Mint Weekly Silver Coin Sales Strongest Among Sets

Buying activity for U.S. silver coins and related products centered mostly around sets, the latest weekly sales data from the U.S. Mint shows.

2012 Silver Proof Set

The 2012 Silver Proof Set was the U.S. Mint’s second best-selling numismatic product overall and the top numismatic silver product

Of the top four performers, however, only one experienced a significant improvement over the prior week. It was a commemorative silver dollar that goes off sale on Monday.

Reclaiming the top weekly sales spot among U.S. Mint silver products were 2012 Silver Proof Sets with a jump of 11,744. That gain was similar to the previous report, which was 11,905. For the year, the proof set’s total went up to 373,876 but sales are expected to taper off slightly in the second half of the month based on last year’s buying trends.

The 2012-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle coin secured second place with a weekly increase of 5,454. It too was very close to the gain seen in the prior round at 5,748. Sales of the uncirculated version have been steady in that range ever since the proof version sold out in early November. So far, collectors have purchased 175,205 compared to 800,000 plus of their proof counterpart.

Not far behind the Silver Eagle stood 2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof Sets. They debuted on November 27. Collectors and gift-givers scooped up another 5,064 during their first full week of availability. When added to the 19,290 purchased in the first weekend, a total of 24,354 sets have been taken.

The one commemorative that shot into the spotlight was the silver dollar within the Star-Spangled Banner Bicentennial Silver Dollar Set. U.S. Mint customers suddenly ordered 4,787 of the sets after picking up 1,097 in the prior round. These Bicentennial sets were added to the line-up on June 1, and as of this report sales are at 38,344. The U.S. Mint will stop selling all 2012 gold and silver commemoratives on Monday, December 17, at 5 PM Eastern Time.
