US Rep. Peters Seeks 2009 Proof Gold and Silver Eagles

Collectors would yet get an opportunity to purchase 2009 Proof American Gold and Silver Eagle coins if a Congressman could get his way.
United States Rep. Gary C. Peters, of Michigan, has sent a letter to US Mint Director Ed Moy asking him to reconsider the decision to not strike proof 2009 Eagles.
The US Mint announced the cancellation of the coins back on October 6th.
"All available 22-karat gold and silver bullion blanks are being allocated to the American Eagle Gold and American Eagle Silver Bullion Coin Programs, as mandated by Public Law 99-185 and Public Law 99-61, respectively," stated the Mint in the release explaining the cancellation of the proof versions.
In a recent Numismatic News Viewpoint article offering his position, Peters commented that he was made aware of the Mint’s position by a resident. As a coin collector, Peters could understand the resident’s disappointment.
"While I appreciate the efforts of the U.S. Mint to comply with the aforementioned laws, I do not believe that this must necessarily preclude coining proof silver and gold American Eagles this year," wrote Rep. Peters. "Interrupting this program after 23 years will disappoint thousands of collectors and damage what has become a considerable customer base."
Peters continues that the Mint should strike as many of the proof coins as they are able to in the remaining days of 2009, then offer a lottery system to ensure the fairest distribution possible to interested collectors.
To further his support on the matter, Rep. Peters on Nov. 18 sent his fellow House members a Dear Colleague letter entitled "Help collectors and raise revenue." In that letter, he also conveyed that the Eagles were a profitable enterprise for the Treasury saying the program made $166 million for fiscal year 2008 and $220.1 million in fiscal year 2007.
Peters is enlisting the help of all collectors as well, requesting them to contact their congressman and express their opinion on the matter.
"If you share my feelings on this issue, I encourage you to call your member of Congress and ask them to contact me and sign my letter to Director Moy," states Peters. "You can confirm who your member of Congress is and find their contact information at www.house.gov."
Only time will tell if Peters will be successful in his endeavor. Given the lateness of the year, it would appear an uphill battle. Obviously, even if he is, only a fraction would be struck as compared to previous years. However, any that are produced would insure a continuation of the Eagle program that has run annually since 1986.

Rep. Gary Peters (D-MI) is a fake. He is not for sound money having not co-sponsored Ron Paul’s HR1207 to Audit the Fed.
I am very much supportive of the U.S. Mint producing a 2009 Proof American Silver Eagel Coin. The Mint has put much into producing/minting way to many of the 2009 Bullion Silver Eagles which if true, has drastically reduced the number of Silver Blanks that could and should have been used for the 2009 Proof Coin.
