US Silver Coin Values Go Ballistic

1954 Franklin Half Dollar

The price of silver on Tuesday soared above $34 an ounce, bringing the melt values of older US circulating coins to a 31-year high and significantly cutting premiums of newer US Mint silver coins and sets.

While silver prices eventually settled toward the $33 level — still at a 31-year closing high in New York, the melt value of silver coins remained on fire. Value comparisons of older and modern coins and sets between various dates highlight the sharp increases.

For reference, the London silver fix was used as the price for the below dates. The current US Mint prices for 2010 and 2011 sets and coins it directly sells to the public are beside the product description.
