Annually issued, this year’s set includes 13 coins in collector proof finish. Seven are in 90% silver and 10% copper. The other six are in regular clad composition similar to those found in circulation. Specifically, coins within the 2016 Silver Proof Set include:

  • 2016-S Native American $1 Coin with a one-year design honoring Native American code talkers;
  • Three 2016-S Presidential $1 Coins with unique designs featuring former Presidents of the United States Richard M. Nixon, Gerald R. Ford, and Ronald Reagan;
  • 2016-S Kennedy Half Dollar;
  • Five 2016-S America the Beautiful Quarters with one-year designs commemorating Shawnee National Forest (IL), Cumberland Gap National Historic Park (KY), Harpers Ferry National Historical Park (WV), Theodore Roosevelt National Park (ND), and Fort Moultrie (Fort Sumter National Monument) (SC);
  • 2016-S Roosevelt Dime;
  • 2016-S Jefferson Nickel; and
  • 2016-S Lincoln Cent

Each is made at the San Francisco Mint and has an ‘S’ mint mark. With their collector proof finish, coins showcase frosty designs that attractively contrast against mirror-like backgrounds.

One Less Coin

Presidential $1 Coins debuted in 2007 with four deceased U.S. Presidents honored each year since, until this year. The dollar series is in its 10th and final year with only three deceased U.S. presidents to honor. Consequently, this year’s silver proof set has one less coin. Its price as a result is also $1 cheaper at $52.95.

Final Year of 90% Silver Coins

The seven silver coins of the set include the half-dollar, five quarters and dime. The U.S. Mint now has the authority to produce them in higher silver purity, like .999 or .9999 fine, so 2016 could be the last year for these 90% silver coins.

Melt Value of Silver Coins in Set

The silver coins have a combined silver weight of 1.34 troy ounces. Based on Friday’s London silver price of $16.17 an ounce, each set has an approximate melt value of $21.64. In contrast, the legal tender face value of the thirteen coins comes to $5.91.

Set Packaging

Coins of the set are in three protective lenses. One lens holds the final three clad Presidential $1 Coins, one lens has the five silver America the Beautiful Quarters and one lens holds the Native American $1 Coin, the silver Kennedy half-dollar, the silver Roosevelt dime, the clad Jefferson nickel and the Lincoln cent.

Release of this set was delayed until a printing error on the outer box was corrected and new ones made. The original packaging showed a photo of Cumberland Falls State Resort Park instead of Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.
